This dresser is so fun and the best part: Lena Corwin posted a step-by-step how to here.

Ta da! Here is the almost finished baby quilt I’ve been working on. I finished free motion quilting the quilt last night (and boy am I sore today!). Free motion quilting means that instead of sewing in straight lines you move the fabric in organic, rolling lines. I’ve never done free motion quilting before and was really proud of myself for figuring it out. I just have to bind it and in the mail it goes to C. I think my favorite part is the strips of her father and her husband’s dress shirts bound into the backing. PS This is the quilt that inspired it all. Alissa was so nice and answered lots of my silly quilting questions. She has a great sewing blog with lots of great projects.

I would have loved this cardboard house as a child. My cool mama lived in SOHO before it was SOHO and at the door of her converted loft a homeless man lived in a refrigerator box. She was glad he was there, as it made her feel safer (she and her roommate were friendly enough with the man and gave him food and blankets). I remember hearing this story when I was young and worrying about a man who had to live in a refrigerator box (how did he keep warm in the winter, I wondered), but, also being a little envious in that child-like way that sees everything difficult as an adventure. (merci for the great site Black Eiffel)

I spied this sweet vintage inspired chandelier over at Land of Nod ($119). I could see this in a hallway or bathroom.

I’m a huge fan of Black*Effiel and my favorite posts are the one she does on children’s books. See them all here.

High on the list of things my parents never suspected: that the D’Aulaires’ Book of Norse Myths and Book of Greek Myths would save their daughter’s tush more times than she can count. Being able to cite various myths in written exams (and sometimes even just recognizing a myth) always seemed to get me a passing grade. As I study the history of design, it’s wonderful and a little awe inspiring how often myths are referenced in modern culture. Anyway, I just noticed that the New York Review of Books is offering the Book of Norse Myths at 25% off the hardback price — $18.71.

Mom and I stopped in to Micheal’s to check out the scene (yeah to gettin’ my fill of the strip mall) and spied this set of 26 vintage inspired Animal Alphabet cards for $9.99 from Martha Stewart Crafts line. So cute and such a good price. They would be very sweet in a nursery or just framing one or two of the letters that most appealed. Two of my closest friends are pregnant and due the same week so recently I’ve been digging all the cool baby stuff I could buy.

Nancy, my mother-in-law, is always finding cool and unusual items (she’s a design scout!) It’s not surprising given that she runs a fantastic floral design business in Needham, MA which you can check out here! She sent me a link to Ferm Living Wall Stickers and I particularly liked the “waterworld” decal set pictured here. How awesome is the coral? What a fun way to decorate a bathroom, entry way or ceiling.

As a shopper, I get fatigued easily — it seems all the stores carry the same “cool” stuff at the same time. I’m sure you’ve had the experience of seeing the same patterned tote or new fangled desk organizer or graphic file folders EVERYWHERE. And I just get tired of it. I suppose its the power of the “big box” buyers (although the same thing happens with indie stores — you’ll see the same stuff in all of them too) and I suppose its why I’m drawn to old things, to vintage things, to any objects (vintage or not) that feel authentic and fresh. So, when I come across something I haven’t seen, and {oh joyousness!} a shop where there are many cool things I haven’t seen, its a nice feeling. One such store is Romp — a brooklyn based kids store that sells some funky, fun and not just for kids stuff. A few of my favs are below.
Foxes ($7-10 each)
Hedgehogs ($8)
Mushroom “merci” stamp ($8)
Mosaic Blocks ($48)
Leather animals ($40)
