The Nursery!

May 8, 2009

We’re into the final stretch and just to prove I’m ready (ha!), here is a shot of our nursery. In the beginning of my pregnancy I somehow felt that the nursery should be as “decorated” as the rest of the house and incorporate lots of cool vintage items which then of course started to feel like too much pressure on me and on the baby.  In the end,  we decided to keep the nursery as simple and low key as possible.  It still looks nice, but isn’t overdecorated.  I’m sure this will evolve over time, as our son develops his own personality and desires (and I find the perfect vintage poster).  We also kept it affordable –  the crib, changing table and flag decals ($10 dollars a set and I used two!) are all from Wal-Mart.  The Anthroplogie rug, trashcan and Oeuf baby lounger were all gifts.  The sheet has sweet clouds (6.99) on it and the crib skirt ($16.99) is striped — both are from Target.  I nearly fainted when I saw how much designer crib skirts cost (seriously, at $250 dollars a skirt, that is a business I should get into).  I used myregistry.com for my baby showers and what is genius about the site that you can add products from ANY website to your registry so I was able to get what I really truly wanted.

I’m lusting after this lamp from CB2 — It’s huge and on a dimmer so I can see it over the changing table in the nursery or over our dinning room table.  At $199 it doesn’t break the bank….

Pink and Stripes

May 6, 2009

picture-124

With the end of pregnancy in sight, I’m letting myself do some spring window shopping.  I love the pale pinks and stripes this season.  Pink top from here, blue from here, striped flats here and gold flats here.

I opened up the link to this house in a tab on my browser last week and haven’t been able to bring myself to close it (always a sign I should blog about something).  This house is more modern than is really my style (sadly) but something about how warm and clean these interiors are makes me wish that this was my second home in a fabulous city (london? paris? san franciso?).  Or, that my sister lived here and I could come visit whenever I wanted.  I’d love to kick my shoes off and pad around barefoot with some red wine and tell jokes.  Please click over to Desire to Inspire to see the images in glorious full size.

Hermes is a brand whose design just delights me, like this waterlily tea set.  I especially like their vintage designs. I love window shopping here in NYC and was delighted to find this online auction of vintage Hermes goods – lots of eye candy with over 800 lots!   If I was in the mood to buy (which I’m not!), some of the estimates are very low (30 euros!).

Read This!

Some of my recent favorite blog posts (oh how I hate it when I stay away too long).

A sweet bicycle built for three, a sweet nursery and a even sweeter video about makin’ babies.

A restaurant I just have to try.

A buy local campaign.

A great interview with a houseboat dweller (Thanks, South Willard).  Did you see that Jacques Torres lives on a boat too?

Edward Levine’s amazing “Domains” interview series over at the Times.

A stunning collection of interiors with plants in them.

A great book full of wallpaper DIY projects and one on gardening anywhere, with anything.

Finally, how to find coupons for organic food brands.

Catching My Breath

May 2, 2009

The weeks are coming and going with alarming speed these days.  I finished up my job yesterday and am now just getting ready for the baby to arrive.  Maybe I’ll have time to make baby quilt…We had a great childbirth class today at the Prenatal Yoga Center at 72nd Street taught by Terry Richmond who is just excellent.   I highly, highly recommend the Prenatal Yoga Center after a in-retrospect-humorous-but-in-the-moment-horrifyingly bad class at New York Hospital.   In the way pregnant woman are wont to do, I came home at 6 irritable and swollen and passed out until 9 when I woke up mellow and in love with life.  Now listening to Jason Mraz and catching up on a good six weeks of blog reading.  I miss you guys.  LOVE, Abbey

One of my favorite features over at Design*Sponge is Weeder’s DigestSarah’s arrangements are nothing short of contagious. You can buy them at her shop Saipua too (hint, hint to Tim and anyone ever thinking of sending me flowers (you know who you are).  And, congratulations to Grace, now a newly married lady!  And, Samantha is having a baby (woot!)
