My Handmade Christmas: Calendar and Pens

December 2, 2008

I’ve mentioned that my side of the family is doing full-on handmade christmas this year to both save money and refocus on what the holidays are really about. I’m excited but really want to do handmade right: we’ve all been on the receiving end of not-quite-successful handmade gifts that end up being a burden rather than a gift (ugly handmade ribbon belts that constantly slip or rock-hard cookies come to mind). Don’t worry, no one who gave me these things reads this blog! Worst of all, sometimes making something by hand ends up costs WAY more than just buying it (say any knitting project!). With these two things in mind – true chicness and true cheapness (of materials) – I’ll be sharing some the projects I’ll be making this week.

First up: great paper covered bic pens which are cheap, cute and easy for the non crafter!!. They would be fun as a stocking stuffer or to accompany this great DIY calendar with fabric inserts from A Little Hut: the downloadable template costs $5 on Etsy. A perfect way to use up a paper or fabric stash!

I would LOVE to get one of those calendars- that’s such a good idea. Thanks for the tip!

Love the bic pens—what a fun idea! There’s so much great paper out there now, and I always want to buy some but never know what to do with it. This is perfect!

The pens look great! I made ornaments this year out of sculpey. It was so easy and fun and they will make great gifts.

Yay! I can’t wait to see your projects. I wish I could bring over a plat of cookies and have a craft party.

i feel like there is a strong & growing wave of families that are turning to alternative holiday giving this season–not just because of the economy, but as you said, because “handmade” changes the thought process of holiday giving. love your ideas!

The pen idea is fabulous. I’m so glad you are sharing all of these ideas. I’m trying to do more handmade and vintage this year. It’s a bit exciting to see how Christmas will turn out this year. It’s unpredictable.
