Inspiration In Trees

October 14, 2008

In the course of some other research today I came across this image from the Yale University Art Gallery.  Evidently Monet was influenced by this photographer’s work and I can see it — the luminous quality of this photograph.  I’ve been obsessed with trees recently — I devoured The Wild Trees by Richard Preston.  It is a non-fiction book about the life of redwood trees. I highly, highly recommend it.

I’m a little bit obsessed with trees too. I want to cover a sofa in the Marimekko tree fabric – I love that. I love pictures of tress, but in real life I don’t spend that much time looking at them.

I’m in Maine right now enjoying the incredible trees here. Peak season, for sure!

I read Preston’s excerpt in the New Yorker and bought that book for my dad – it’s absolutely amazing.

(and I love love LOVE gustave le gray … his photos are sublime.)

If you enjoyed reading The Wild Trees, you might enjoy seeing the trees.

Most copies, if not all copies, have no photographs at all.

Here are a lot of the trees, and more:

That’s the actual groves written about in the book, not just redwoods in general. Although, I did put some basic redwood photos in the Album #1 as well.

Note the tallest redwoods link there – it has the latest tallest redwoods info from Michael Taylor, updated to Oct. 29, 2008.

Cheers,
